Africa Centre for Biodiversity

visiting India in 2009

A group of 16 Bt-cotton farmers from Mboza and Ndumo in northern KwaZulu-Natal, together with 3 farmers from the Eastern Cape, participated in a farmer learning exchange in India in January 2009. The 16-day visit exposed the farmers to Indian ecological farming practices and the Indian experience of Bt cotton farming. The farmers interacted with Indian activists, academics and farmers from across Zaheerabad and Warangal in Andhra Pradesh; Bangalore and nearby organic farms in Karnataka; Trivendrum in Kerala and Trichy and Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The learning exchange was facilitated by the African Centre for Biosafety & Dr Harald Witt from the Economic History and Development Studies Programme at the UKZN, and was hosted in India by the Deccan Development Society (DDS) and their partners from the South Against Genetic Engineering (SAGE).
